Brightest Star is a personal collection of songs inspired by the sudden passing of Jerrika’s mother in the summer of 2016. “During this time of grief and reflection, music was the world in which I was able to escape – where I could feel close to my mother. She was my best friend, my moral compass, my confidant. The album’s inspiration comes from that place, culminating as a celebration of my mother though my music. She is still here with me, encouraging me every step of the way,” stated Mighelle in her recent newsletter.
“Trouble is a gritty, rootsy, wild song, about the darkness that lives in all of us. It took me years to write it because that meant I had to face my demons. I found that reaching beyond my normal vocal boundaries was cathartic for me. It is my hope that if people sing along with this song, it may be healing for them as well.”
